How to Take Control of Your Financial Life – Money Tips from Dad

Hey everyone!

I’m Larry, husband and dad of 3 teenagers. Like you, I’m sure, I juggle everyday life: work, school, sports, groceries, laundry, food… You know, the routine! And on top of that, you have to manage finances. Not always easy, right?

Let’s face it, personal finance isn’t always the most thrilling thing but it’s probably the most important thing. Between bills piling up, stagnating retirement savings, and the dream of a bigger house (or just a trip down South!), it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

That’s precisely why I created the Money Tips from Dad blog! On this blog you will find no complicated jargon or obscure investment strategies. My goal is to share with you, everyday Canadians (and beyond), concrete tips and tricks to:

  • Better manage your family budget: We’ll look together at how to optimize your expenses, negotiate your bills, and set up a simple system to track your finances.
  • Save effectively, especially on a regular salary: Because yes, it’s possible to put money aside, even with children! We’ll explore different savings and investment strategies adapted to the reality of families.
  • Prepare your children’s financial future: RESP, TFSA… we’ll demystify these programs and see how to invest for their studies (or their first apartment when the time comes … if that’s even still possible).
  • Achieve your projects, big and small: Whether it’s renovating the kitchen, changing cars, or going to Europe with the family, we’ll see how to plan and finance your dreams, without getting into debt (or as little as possible)!

In short, Money Tips from Dad is your practical guide to taking control of your finances and building a more secure future for you and your family. My goal was to create a resource for my children to figure out what finances are all about. It’s kind of like my gift to them for the future so they can (hopefully) avoid the mistakes I made.

Why trust me?

Actually, don’t trust me. Do your own research and please invest in what makes sense for you and build a strategy that will work for your family. I’m far from a financial expert! This is really a personal finance journal for me. I’m a Canadian parent like you, who has learned (and is still learning!) to manage our family’s finances over the years. I’ve made many mistakes along the way, I’ve had some successes also, but most importantly, I’ve understood one thing: you don’t need to be a Warren Buffet type of genius or a financial planner to figure this out!

On this blog, I’m going to share with you my experiences, my discoveries, and the resources that have helped me. We’ll learn together, simply.
